What’s On TV – Sunday (01/26/2020) – ‘Avenue 5’ Tries to Find Its Footing While Controversial Grammys Air

Hugh Laurie and Rebecca Front in "Avenue 5"

A contentious awards ceremony that crowns the best and brightest in the music industry. A space comedy trying to find its footing. A classic story of love, ambition, and lots of rabbits. All this and more awaits you in tonight’s lineup!

“Avenue 5” (HBO) at 10:00 PM EST

Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad and Suzy Nakamura in “Avenue 5”

After a premiere that amused but was unable to fill the hole left by “Veep,” “Avenue 5” will try in its second episode to fully win over viewers. The show’s pedigree is excellent: with showrunner Armando Iannucci at the helm and cast members like Hugh Laurie, Zach Woods, and Josh Gad, we’re in safe hands. But although the show about disastrous space tourism is legitimately funny, so far it lacks the satirical bite that has defined so much of Iannucci’s best work.

“The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards” (CBS) at 8:00 PM EST

Amidst controversy as former Grammys CEO claims that the awards feature significant vote rigging, music’s biggest night is nonetheless trucking along. Tonight, we’ll see some of the top performers in the music industry honored for their contributions this year. Alicia Keys returns for the second year in a row to host the Grammys, and the awards show will feature performances from Lil Nas X, BTS, Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo, and more.

“The Favourite” (HBO2) at 9:00 PM EST

Olivia Colman The Favourite 2

Let’s say you’ve just returned from the cinema after seeing “Little Women,” or are counting down the days until “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” finally goes into wide release. You’re jonesing for a feminist, surprisingly modern period drama to hold you over, and that’s “The Favourite” in spades. From director Yorgos Lanthimos, “The Favourite” stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone as a pair of social-climbing gentlewomen vying for the affections of a morose Queen Anne (Olivia Colman, winning an Oscar for her performance here) by any means necessary.
