What’s On TV? – Sunday (06/30/2019) – Will ‘The Loudest Voice’ Triumph?

The Loudest Voice | Official Trailer | Russell Crowe SHOWTIME Series (screen grab) Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts CR: SHOWTIME

This week sees several new and returning programs for both cable and network television, now that the summer season has begun in earnest. Whether it’s the exploration of a controversial political figure, an amnesiac woman’s quest to rediscover her identity, or the collaboration between an NYPD detective and a professor who specializes in abnormal behavior, there’s something for everyone on the air tonight.

“The Loudest Voice” (Showtime) at 10:00 PM EDT

The past few years have been very kind to biopics concerning major conservative political figures. The latest entry in this subgenre is “The Loudest Voice”, which focuses on Roger Ailes, the famously controversial media oligarch who was best-known for founding of Fox News and the multitude of sexual harassment allegations that eventually forced him to resign in disgrace. Russell Crowe plays Ailes under pounds of makeup and a fat suit, supported by Naomi Watts as Gretchen Carlson and Sienna Miller as Beth Ailes. Although the show has been accused by some critics of going easy on Roger Ailes, it should nevertheless provide a unique look into the divisive figure’s introspection.

“The Rook” (Starz) at 8:00 PM EDT

Based on a novel by Australian author Daniel O’Malley, “The Rook” is a new supernatural drama airing on Starz beginning this week. The premise is simple: a woman wakes up in London surrounded by corpses and with no clue of who she is or how she ended up in such a circumstance. It turns out, she soon learns, that she is an agent of a secret organization for people with supernatural powers. Her journey to rediscovering her identity is at the heart of “The Rook”, as is the mystery of how her memories were taken away from her in the first place.

“Instinct” (CBS) at 9:00 PM EDT

The CBS police procedural “Instinct” begins its second season tonight. Starring Alan Cumming and Bojana Novakovic, “Instinct” details the working relationship between a police officer and a former CIA operative/professor whose expert knowledge of abnormal psychology is frequently an asset to various investigations. Based on novelist James Patterson’s “Murder Games”, “Instinct” has garnered a lukewarm reception from critics but has achieved enough solid ratings based on the strength and likability of the two lead actors.

“Avatar” (FX) at 6:30 PM EDT

“Avatar” has been in the news lately as “Avengers: Endgame” doggedly attempts to steal its crown as the highest-grossing film of all time, and as its long-delayed sequels inch closer to fruition. But the actual minutia of the film has been strangely forgotten by most audiences beyond the glib descriptor of “Avatar” as “Dances With Wolves in Space.” Now you’ve got a chance to give it a watch and familiarize yourself with the quasi-environmentalist, “Romeo and Juliet” space epic that is “Avatar” — watching at home may not do its groundbreaking special effects justice, but it’s better than nothing.

Never fear — there’s plenty more to watch! Check out the other new episodes that will be airing tonight.
