What’s On TV? – Sunday (07/21/2019) – Dysfunctional Relationships and the Search for Justice

Big Little Lies 2

Tonight we’ll see rich women scheme, corporate lawyers battle injustice, and two supremely underrated films get their day in the sun. While we say goodbye to a few very popular shows, there’s still a lot to look forward to as an uncommonly strong Sunday summer lineup continues.

“Big Little Lies” (HBO) at 9:00 PM EDT

The second season of “Big Little Lies” has not been without its fair share of controversy. Fans were disappointed to learn that creative control had been wrestled away from acclaimed director Andrea Arnold, to the perceived detriment of the show’s quality. But for better or worse, “Big Little Lies” draws to a close tonight — HBO executives have said that a season three would be “unrealistic,” so this season will likely be its last. Of course, we’ve heard that before, so whether or not it’ll be gone for good is anyone’s guess.

“Burden of Truth” (CW) at 8:00 PM EDT

Although the second season of “Burden of Truth” finished airing in its native Canada months ago, tonight those of us who live south of the border will see the season finale. It’s the story of a corporate attorney (Kristin Kreuk) who begins to discover unsettling details about her pharmaceutical company clients — after seeking justice for several young women from her hometown, season two sees her attempt to get a fresh start at a new law firm. And, for “Burden of Truth” fans, there’s some good news: the show has already been renewed and is scheduled to air its next season in summer 2020.

“Some Kind of Wonderful” (Flix) at 10:00 PM EDT

Some Kind of Wonderful

Hold onto your hats: tonight, is the opportunity to see “Some Kind of Wonderful,” one of the great underrated teen romantic comedies of the 1980s. Eric Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson have incredible chemistry together, even though Stoltz’s character is a giant idiot willing to throw his college savings away on diamonds for a girl he barely knows and clearly does not deserve. It never took on the legendary status that some of its contemporaries were able to achieve, but it’s worth a watch if only for the iconic looks served up by Masterson and one of the all-time great cinematic “practice” kisses.

“Wildlife” (Showtime 2) at 8:15 PM EDT

Almost without a shred of fanfare, Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal quietly put in possibly the best performances of their careers in service of Paul Dano‘s directorial debut, “Wildlife.” The film stars Ed Oxenbould as a reserved teen trying to navigate his parents’ rapidly disintegrating relationship, as his frequently unemployed father (Gyllenhaal) leaves home to find work fighting wildfires and his mother (Mulligan) begins to date other men. It’s a beautifully shot film and one that shows a tremendous amount of vision from its creators.
