The Cast of HBO's "Succession"

Younger audiences get their day in the sun with the annual “Teen Choice Awards,” and we’re treated to another season of scorching animosity between family members on “Succession.” As the temperatures slowly begin to cool down, we make our way into the prestigious fall television season, with a lot of options on the schedule to impress.

“Succession” (HBO) at 9:00 PM ET

Tonight, what may be HBO’s best-kept secret gears up for its second season. “Succession” revolves around a profoundly dysfunctional family whose prosperous business is attempting to weather a particularly rocky transition of power that could rival some of the bloodier episodes in British royal history. The talented cast is assembled to perfection, each seemingly reveling in the vicious pettiness they’re encouraged, to bring to their characters.

“Teen Choice Awards 2019” (FOX) at 8:00 PM ET

The “Teen Choice Awards” may not be the most prestigious of awards shows. But if you’re a within the age bracket, it’s one of the very few times where your opinion on popular culture is considered rather than just having adult film fans scream at you to “watch more classic movies!” This year’s award show will be hosted by Lucy Hale of “Pretty Little Lies” and David Dobrik of Youtube fame. Older audience members may feel their bones literally turn to dust with the revelation that “The Office” is competing under Best Throwback Show and the Jonas Brothers are receiving a career achievement award. Also, the Choice Liplock award category is gone which, let’s be real, is 90% of the show’s appeal.

“Grantchester” (PBS) at 9:00 PM ET

The fourth season of “Grantchester” draws to a close tonight. And although the show has recently announced that it will be returning for a fifth season likely sometime next year, we say goodbye to our favorite crime-fighting vicar as James Norton makes his exit from the show. Picking up the mantel will be equally dreamy Tom Brittney, who plays a reverend who will also apparently be teaming up with local law enforcement to solve crimes. Grantchester is a very bizarre little town, but somehow it’s citizens have yet to complain!

“The Hate U Give” (HBOSGe) at 6:45 PM ET

If you’re like most movie-going audiences of 2018, you missed out on “The Hate U Give” in theaters. Now’s your opportunity to remedy that! Amandla Stenberg plays a black teenager whose attendance at a predominantly white private school gives her a double life, full of code-switching and what W.E.B. Du Bois would refer to as double consciousness. But it’s the murder of a friend shot by police forces her to discover the power of her own unique voice. It’s earnest and timely, full of hope and agency, and “The Hate U Give” didn’t get the reception it deserved.
