What’s On TV?-Thursday (6/27/19)–‘The This Old House Hour’ Brings New Life to Old Haunts

On an episode of “Friends,” Joey once famously tried to say that “Thursday” was the “third day.” Luckily, with the amount of great TV on tonight, many will probably have a better day than he was having. From historic homes in need of some TLC, to golf tournaments–and maybe even some mini-golf–it might be difficult not to turn on the television.

Pick of the Day

“The This Old House Hour (PBS)” at 8pm ET

This season, the storied and Emmy-winning PBS series about home renovation is celebrating 40 years on air. Like many of the shows that PBS is known for, “The This Old House Hour” satisfies two of viewers’ desires: to learn something new, and to be entertained. The series has a particularly original model that sets it a part from other remodeling series. Instead of showing viewers a new house each episode, the PBS classic broadcasts a renovation of an entire house over the course of several. That way, fans and audiences can feel a part of the progress that tradesmen Roger Cook, Tom Silva, Norm Abram, and Richard Trethewey are making. Hosted by Kevin O’Connor, “The This Old House Hour” is an early pioneer of home renovation shows, and it remains one of the most compelling and wholesome carpentry and remodeling series today. Tune in at 8pm ET for an hour of true “home” entertainment.

What’s Ending?

“Double Shot at Love with DJ Pauly D & Vinny (MTV)” at 8 & 9pm ET

“Double Shot at Love” has been a mainstay of MTV programming for a number of years now. But this year was a first for “Jersey Shore” alums DJ Pauly D and Vinny to be a part of the series. Over the course of this show, one-time playboys gave their best shot at finding love–that one special person they can “Gym, Tan, and Laundry” with. Now, fans can tune in to see if their efforts have paid off. Who will they choose? Find out at 8 and 9pm for a double feature of “Double Shot.”

“Life in Pieces (CBS)” at 9 & 9:30pm ET

Tonight will be the last opportunity to watch a new episode of “Life in Pieces,” as CBS announced in May that they would be canceling the series after four seasons. Each episode of the hilarious series is structured as three separate but intertwining short stories that follow the LA-based Short family. Before it’s too late, fans should tune in to the two-part Season 4 finale.

“In the Dark (CW)” at 9pm ET

The popular CW show “In the Dark” centers on a blind woman named Murphy Mason (Perry Mattfeld) who is working tirelessly to help solve the murder of her friend, Tyson. A bold and dark comedy, the season finale titled “It’s Always Been You” premieres tonight at 9pm on the CW. Fans of irreverent characters and gripping thrill won’t want to miss one of the CW’s best shows. Tune in at 9pm ET.

TV Specials

“Korn Ferry Tour Golf: Utah Championship (GOLF)” at 6pm ET

Viewers can tune into ABC”s “Holey Moley,” a rowdy mini golf reality show. But they can also watch actual professional golf–you know, where the courses don’t have elaborate set designs and giant windmills. Check out the “Korn Ferry Tour,” which was previously named after Web.com until this year’s change in sponsorship. It’s a developmental tour for the “PGA Tour”–an event many will have heard of, even if they couldn’t tell a “birdie” from a “bogey.” Tune in at 6pm to watch Mark Anderson, Ben Kohles, Danny Walker, Vincent Whaley and Tim Wilkinson compete.

Movies on TV

“Caddyshack” (1980), dir. Harold Ramis

Harold Ramis’ quintessential comedy, “Caddyshack,” (1980) will be broadcasting tonight at 8pm on AMC. The Bill Murray and Chevy Chase classic has inspired countless films with similar plot lines – just take a look at “Russian Doll,” “Happy Death Day” or even “50 First Dates.” There is a real trope in cinema and TV about the horrors of reliving the same day over and over again, and “Caddyshack” played a big role in popularizing it. Uncanny and iconic, the film will brighten any viewers’ Thursday. Tune in to AMC at 8pm ET.

“Inception (2010),” dir. Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan’s polarizing film, “Inception” (2010) will put many TV-goers into a cinematic fever dream tonight. Nebulous, complicated, and entirely fascinating, “Inception” is arguably the penultimate Nolan film. But beyond that, the film also features extraordinary performances from Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and more. Tune in tonight at 8pm on MAX.
