What’s on TV? – Tuesday (2/19/19) – Absurdist Series ‘Miracle Workers’ and ‘At Home with Amy Sedaris’ Keep the Laughs Coming

Tonight we’ve got a strong new series, a season premiere for Amy Sedaris, and some good flicks. “Miracle Workers” leads the way at TBS. The Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi mini-series proves that religion, or at least God, can be funny. Amy Sedaris will draw an audience for her series “At Home with Amy Sedaris,” which kicks off its second season tonight. Finally, films like “The Princess Bride,” “The Waterboy” and “The Cider House Rules” all bring quality movies to the small screen.

Pick of the Day

“Miracle Workers” on TBS at 10:30 PM

“Miracle Workers” could be one of the funniest series to hit TBS this year, and after a strong premiere becomes our pick of the night. The series follows Danielle Radcliffe as Craig, an angel who becomes tasked with saving the planet Earth. God (Steve Buscemi) has become disillusioned with humanity and chooses to destroy it all. However, when Eliza (Geraldine Viswanathan) makes a bargain with God to solve an unsolvable prayer, Craig and Eliza embark on saving the planet. The series also stars Karan Soni, who has quickly made a good career of fun side characters. If you missed the first episode, you can watch it here. The limited series will also only run seven episodes, so the commitment to the high concept comedy should not take much effort.

What’s Premiering?

At Home with Amy Sedaris

Amy Sedaris has established herself as a quirky comedian over the past two decades. While she remains far from being a household name, Sedaris has built a fanbase. That fanbase was strong enough for truTV to give her a series. The weird and absurdist comedy gives Sedaris the ability to send-up the HGTV and Food Network series that dominate the airwaves at times. She’s a comedian who can lean into the idea of a Martha Stewart type of character, and never fully alienate the audience. The parody series earned a nomination with the Emmys last year for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, and with a strong outing, could make the cut again. People want to root for Sedaris and the who’s who of guest stars last season means we’ll likely see a repeat in the next season as well.

Movies on TV

The passing of William Goldman made a generation of film fans aware of the importance of the best script doctor in film history. Goldman helped dozens of films reach their full potential. Yet his most remember film might be his original fairytale. “The Princess Bride” remains a landmark achievement for a dozen reasons (probably more). The sweet and cute love story, high levels of comedy, and excellent characters have made this one an all-time classic. The movie cemented a series of pop culture figures in the minds of the world, including Andre the GiantCary Elwes, and Robin Wright. The fairy tale film will air on Cinemax at 8 PM tonight.

If you’re in the mood for a classic Adam Sandler film, “The Waterboy” will be on E! at 8 PM. The Sandler comedy plays into many of the tropes that made him a huge box office sensation. However, Sandler’s having fun throughout the film, and it is obvious from the word go. This might be his most quotable movie, due in part to the excellent Henry Winkler and Kathy Bates. The first of Sandler’s two football films, “The Waterboy” remains a perfect version of 1990s studio comedies.

Finally, those feeling Oscar vibes tonight will be able to check out “The Cider House Rules” on FLIX at 8 PM. Arguably Lasse Hallström’s strongest film, “The Cider House Rules” follows Homer Wells (Tobey Maguire) as he tries to find his way in the world. An orphaned boy who grows up to become a physicians assistant (Michael Caine), Wells chooses to leave the orphanage and become an apple picker for Wally (Paul Rudd), a young Air Force pilot. Homer falls in love with Candy (Charlize Theron), bonds with Mr. Rose (Delroy Lindo) the apple picker, and finally begins to understand the world outside of the orphanage. It’s a schmaltzy film, but it took home two Oscars for Caine and screenwriter/author John Irving. It may often be spoken about derogatorily as an “Oscar Bait” film, but the movie continues to have fans today.
